Today China marks the 81st anniversary of the September 18th Incident in Shenyang City, the capital of north eastern Liaoning province. Thousands of people have visited the 9/18 museum there to remember and warn against forgetting history, and national humiliation.
The world and history will not forget September 18th, 1931. On what’s considered the darkest day in modern Chinese history, Japan attacked Shenyang. This was a step toward their occupation of the entire northeastern China.
Zhang Juxin, Marshal Zhang Xueliang's grandson, says, "It is an important date for us to remember, as my grandfather has told me, the young generation shall always remember 9.18 incident, and to learn the importance of being Chinese."
The 9/18 plot provided Japan with a pretext for a formal invasion. They masked their action as a so-called legitimate measure to protect a vital railway of industrial importance. The memory of the incident has been kept alive through the generations.
Zuo Aijia, a high school student, says, "Although we are living in peace today, the younger generation like us should always remember the incident and not forget the national humiliation."
During the commemoration event, protests were also held near the museum. They are in response to the recent move by Japan’s government to nationalize the Diaoyu islands. While the protests were peaceful, one local professor urged people to remain rational.
Professor Qiu Xinhua, head of Chinese Modern History Studies, says, "We should point out the fundamental differences between Noda’s right wing political party and the general Japanese people. And patriotic protests should be carried out in a rational manner. The sentiments shouldn’t go so far as to turn into boycotts of Japanese goods and services."
At today’s commemoration event, a siren sounded for three minutes. Although the sound only lasted a short time, the alarm still sounds in the minds of many. China is not the same as it was 81 years ago, but the will and resolve of the Chinese people to uphold China’s territorial sovereignty remain firm.
