126 Chinese nationals, suspected of being involved in a transnational phone fraud case, have been repatriated back to China. The suspects were escorted to Beijing by Chinese police, who had worked jointly with their international counterparts on the case.
The two chartered flights from Thailand and Malaysia arrived at the Beijing International Airport Thursday afternoon, carring 126 Chinese suspects who were involved in a transnational telecommunication fraud case. The suspects were escorted by Chinese police, who had worked in collaboration with their counterparts from Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Fiji.
Liu Ancheng, director of Criminal Investigation Bureau, said, "The joint operation not only involves police from the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, and Southeast Asian countries, but also from South Asian and Oceanian countries. It is the first time we have worked together with Sri Lanka and Fiji. The cooperation was very effective."
The police investigation into the phone fraud started in November 2011. That was when the finance manager of a company in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, called local police to report that she had been swindled out of more than 12.6 million yuan.
As more cases were reported, Chinese police established six task forces and sent over 70 policemen overseas. After 6 months of investigation, the police finally succeeded in cracking down on the criminal gang, and resolved 510 phone fraud cases, mostly against Chinese nationals. And the police are determined to carry on the fight.
Liu Ancheng, director of Criminal Investigation Bureau, said, "As swindling rings reach more countries, we will enhace our collaboration with our foreign counterparts and intensify our efforts to crackdown on transnational crimes."
In total 482 suspects were arrested, with 177 from the Chinese mainland, 286 from Taiwan, and 19 from Thailand and Myanmar. The police will continue to pursue additional suspects in the case and the investigation remains underway.
