Over in India, folks recently enjoyed an extended weekend, and a large number of them visited Shimla city of India's northern Himachal Pradesh state. The arrival of thousands of tourists was a welcome sign for the state's tourism industry.
Pleasant weather conditions compelled tourists to visit Shimla and its neighboring areas as they used the opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
The Tourism Department said around 80,000 tourists visited the city over the three-day period.
Naren Shahi from travel agent said, "This is providing a good business to the hoteliers and the guides in the city and we hope that the number of tourists would continue in coming days."
On a less happy note, tourists sometimes faced problems as they found it difficult to find a room as most of the hotels were overbooked.
A tourist said, "We came yesterday, but we cannot find any rooms in the hotels. We had to spend last night on the road."
Tourists also suggest the government should take adequate steps to protect the beauty of the area.
According to media reports, more than 10 million tourists visited the state in the year 2010. And the number is expected to increase in 2011.
Shimla city was called the summer capital during British rule for its cool and pleasant weather.
